From the late 1970s to the digital age, Sweden evolved from a model welfare state into a laboratory of neoliberal and libertarian transformation. Initially, neoliberal reforms redefined social democracy through market rationality, efficiency, and individual responsibility. Think tanks like Timbro and campaigns such as Satsa på dig själv! (Bet on yourself!) popularized the ideal of the self-investing citizen. During the 1980s and 1990s, libertarian movements like Frihetsfronten and the magazine Nyliberalen radicalized this ethos, translating it into a cultural and generational rebellion against state paternalism. With the rise of the Internet, libertarian ideas merged with digital utopianism, producing a “cybertarian” vision that equated freedom with connectivity and creativity. This digital libertarianism reframed autonomy as algorithmic participation, turning the individual into both producer and data subject. Sweden’s trajectory thus reveals the mutation of neoliberal governance into a digital order where freedom becomes a function of visibility, and self-expression a subtle form of control.
