Over the last three decades, the study of the acquisition of phraseology in L2s has gained considerable attention, partially due to the development of methodologies based on learner corpora and to the spread of emerging fields of research such as Learner corpus research. This vast body of research has made a crucial contribution to assigning phraseology a central role in L2 acquisition. Languages have a highly conventional and formulaic character, and phraseological constructions such as collocations or idiomatic expressions represent a challenge for L2 learners to deal with. Phraseology is recognised as one of the features that clearly distinguishes native speaker production of a language from learner production. This paper aims to describe the contribution of Second language acquisition and Learner corpus research to the study of the acquisition of phraseology in L2s, presenting the main results, the most problematic issues and the most relevant perspectives for future research.
