This study investigates the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and dialogue systems into an online Italian language and culture course at the University for Foreigners of Perugia. The experiment involved a group of university students in a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) context, with a focus on Italian Art and Heritage. All implemented AI systems were trained using linguistic and learning materials developed and selected by the University for Foreigners of Perugia, and realized by a team of experts specializing in AI and technologies in collaboration with IUL University. The fundamental feature of the AI system lies in its capacity to adjust to learners' levels by generating personalized output aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels, instant feedback, and immersive learning experiences. Among the experimental functionalities, chatbot scenarios emerge, enabling students to engage in simulated interactions, a dialogue system designed to facilitate easy access to faculty materials, automatic image description, and a chatbot for inquiring about practical information regarding the university and its services to facilitate incoming orientation. This study explores how an immersive AI-mediated approach affects student learning and engagement in online courses and its potential in language learning, addressing challenges and opportunities.

Abstract
This study explores how an immersive AI-mediated approach affects student learning and engagement in online courses and its potential in language learning, addressing challenges and opportunities.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
