The development and dissemination of technologies is one of the phenomena which is more meaningfully affecting the construction of linguistic knowledge and skills. This paper addresses the issue of language learning along with contemporary pedagogical approaches used in online learning environments to enhance student motivation, providing some examples based on our experience in creating an online Italian language course. Firstly, current research on motivation as a crucial factor for learning a foreign language in online environments will be explored. Secondly, the technological tools capable of supporting motivation will be examined in the light of the most recent developments of Learning Management Systems. Finally, some resources and activities used in our online Italian language course, designed to involve students and make them protagonists of their own learning, will be described. The aim is to share experiences and ideas regarding the use of technology as a trigger to create e-learning activities based on learners needs in order to enhance their motivation and their active participation.
