This article offers a critical analysis on Romano Guarnieri (1883-1955), an intellectual of Florentine education, whose name is linked to the history of teaching Italian to foreigners. His method, experimented with great success – starting from the twenties of the last century – in the first summer courses of the University for Foreigners of Perugia, had been developed in the Netherlands, where Guarnieri carried out an intense activity in the promotion of Italian language and culture, founding the committees of the Dante Alighieri Society and the academic tradition of Italian Studies. Guarnieri deeply felt the need to renew foreign language teaching methods also thanks to his experiences abroad; his practice of language teaching (although it was largely based on the teacher’s personal charisma) appears to be definitely connected to the developments of European research in the field of the language teaching between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His biography and the history of the beginnings of the University for Foreigners of Perugia allow us to return to reflect on the cultural propaganda abroad of fascism and on the oscillation between collaboration and autonomy that characterized the attitude of intellectuals and cultural institutions during the fascist twenty years.

Abstract
His biography and the history of the beginnings of the University for Foreigners of Perugia allow us to return to reflect on the cultural propaganda abroad of fascism and on the oscillation between collaboration and autonomy that characterized the attitude of intellectuals and cultural institutions during the fascist twenty years.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
