Pius XI, the Curia and the anti-Semitic change of Fascism – In the face of the anti- Semitic turn of Fascism, Pius XI assumes an attitude of straight out condemnation, expressed in multiple instances in the last months of his pontificate. His reflection goes beyond the condemnation of racial anti-Semitic and marks the beginning of a revision between the Catholic Church and the Hebrews. In the Vatican different positions are taken, some close to the Pope, others more cautious and timid considering the compromise with Mussolini’s government. The two largest catholic publications, „L’Osservatore Romano“ and „La Civiltà Cattolica“ take different positions respectively. This present research describes the plurality of the attitudes, especially in the second half of 1938, when the race-laws were prepared and promulgated by Fascism.
