Legende sanctorum abreviate. Un leggendario francescano abbreviato degli inizi del XIV secolo

The Legende sanctorum abreviate (written in 1314) attest to the use that the Friars Minor made of abbreviationes in their preaching, a connection hitherto known only through Juan Gil de Zamora’s Legende sanctorum. An examination of their sources shows that practically all the chapters derive almost entirely – even word by word – from the Legenda aurea, while the ones that concern the Franciscan saints ‒ Anthony, Clare, Francis and Elizabeth – are summarized versions of, respectively, the Vita secunda of Anthony, the Vita sanctae Clariae virginis, Bonaventure’s Legenda maior, and the lessons from the Office of Saint Elizabeth. For the most part, the compiler of the 14th-century work disassembled the sources’ original texts and endeavored to rearrange them by subject, each topic numbered and highlighted graphically with paragraph marks and underlines. His purpose was to adapt the hagiographic legends to fit the structure of the sermo modernus.

Le Legende sanctorum abreviate (scritte nel 1314) attestano l’uso che i Frati Minori facevano delle abbreviationes nella loro predicazione, un collegamento finora noto solo attraverso la Legende sanctorum di Juan Gil de Zamora. Un esame delle fonti mostra che praticamente tutti i capitoli derivano quasi interamente – persino parola per parola – dalla Legenda aurea, mentre quelli riguardanti i santi francescani – Antonio, Chiara, Francesco ed Elisabetta – sono versioni riassunte, rispettivamente, della Vita secunda di Antonio, della Vita sanctae Clariae virginis, della Legenda maior di Bonaventura, e delle letture tratte dall’Ufficio di Santa Elisabetta. Per la maggior parte, il compilatore dell’opera del XIV secolo smontò i testi originali delle fonti e cercò di riorganizzarli per argomento, numerando ogni tema e evidenziandolo graficamente con capoversi e sottolineature. Il suo scopo era adattare le leggende agiografiche alla struttura del sermo modernus.
