This essay proposes an examination of the genesis of the Baldassarre Castiglione’s Book of the Courtier through the presentation of the texts that prelude the first draft of the work, dating back to around 1512: the draft of a letter to Paolo Canal dated March 1506, with which Castiglione asks for sources on the Sibyls and on illustrious women both from antiquity and from the more recent past; the Lettera al Frisia in difesa delle donne, a text dedicated to the praise of female virtues; the Taccuino in Latin with references to women of the classical world and with the first drafts of dialogues on the theme of courtliness. After these first traces, from which the centrality of the theme of femininity is evident, the witnesses of the first editorial team present themselves, taking up a fundamental essay by Ghino Ghinassi from 1967, to propose a critical edition of the text and commentary notes.
