There is a contemporary, ongoing tendency to appreciate plasticity: distinctions between species, genders, sexual orientations, races, social classes, give way to the concept of a human being in constant dislocation, acting within a tangle of people and living (or nonliving) nonhumans. In the paper I shall a. map out schematically these instances of hybridization, b. show, however, their persisting reference to (some) difference, c. as an index, more generally, of the role of this category
