In this paper I will discuss two Indo-European roots (*gherdh- / *ĝherdh- and *leyg- / *leyĝ-) showing an alternation between velar and palatal stops, with the aim of demonstrating in which way these allotropes can contribute to the formation of different elements in the lexicon of many Indo-European languages. Particular attention will be devoted to the semantics, because both roots analyzed shed a light on an interesting semantic shift (from concrete to abstract), in which is also preserved the primary notion.

Abstract

In this paper I will discuss two Indo-European roots (*gherdh- / *ĝherdh- and *leyg- / *leyĝ-) showing an alternation between velar and palatal stops, with the aim of demonstrating in which way these allotropes can contribute to the formation of different elements in the lexicon of many Indo-European languages. Particular attention will be devoted to the semantics, because both roots analyzed shed a light on an interesting semantic shift (from concrete to abstract), in which is also preserved the primary notion.
