Differire o uccidere: la morte tra i duelli del Furioso

In a literary genre such as the chivalric romance, in which the practice of the arms is the noblest manifestation of the virtus of a knight, a big part of the narration consists in a series of duels. The Furioso appears radically different from the Innamorato from its very beginning. In Boiardo’s work, as early as the first book, duels culminate with the combat between Orlando and Agricane, ending with the death of the pagan hero; instead, Ariosto’s poem is based on the frequent deployment of narrative deferral. The essay aims to demonstrate that, in the first part of the Furioso, the duels are treated as martial games rather than fierce battles, and that in its second part the poem darkens progressing to its bitter end.

In un genere, come quello cavalleresco, nel quale l’esercizio d’armi è la manifestazione più insigne del valore del cavaliere, una parte consistente della narrazione si risolve in una serie di duelli. Il Furioso si struttura fin dall’esordio come radicalmente diverso rispetto all’Innamorato: se la sequela di duelli che punteggiano il poema boiardesco culminano, già nel libro primo, nel lungo e mortale duello tra Orlando e Agricane, Ariosto oppone una struttura basata sul differimento e l’elusione. Il saggio mira a evidenziare come nella prima parte del Furioso i duelli siano più giochi d’arme che battaglie sanguinose, e come, procedendo con la narrazione, il romanzo si incupisca e vada verso una fine tragica.
