The paper analyses William Friedkin's The Exorcist (1973), a cult film that became a worldwide phenomenon. The most controversial movie seen in the Seventies, a masterpiece which remains the greatest success in film history on demoniac possession. Its evocative power is still intact after almost forty years and it’s closely connected to the "ritual", meant as an exorcism "ritual" of purification and transition, that is the only way to release humanity from evil.
