The first paragraph argues that the Resistance, understood as a collective laboratory of emancipation, was the core of the constituent power that gave rise to Italian democracy. The parties of the CLN, however, derived their legitimacy from the armed struggle against the Nazi-Fascists, thanks to the relationship they established with the partisan bands and their demands for grassroots sovereignty. As stated in the second paragraph, it is therefore from the time of the partisan war that the idea stems that the Republican Constitution is first and foremost a project for the liberation of citizens in the name of formal and substantive equality. Hence the importance of the Constitution’s social articles. Today they are being called into question, as argued in the third paragraph, but they contain the unfulfilled program of a new democracy.
