Data-driven learning (DDL) involves using the tools and techniques of corpus linguistics in learning or using a foreign or second language (L2). This article explains in detail exactly what DDL is and how it evolved. It presents the findings of major syntheses to date, and points the way forward in terms of methodologies, potential user populations, innovative approaches and research questions.
