This PhD thesis focuses on the intersection between three topics, which are examined through a multi- and interdisciplinary approach: political communication, the Italian language on social media and Italian identity. The research aims not only to problematize the interpretations of the concept of identity and its practical uses, but also to pinpoint the didactic perspectives extractable from the analysis of digital socio-political data pertaining to the linguistic and the iconic codes. The thesis is threefold in structure. The first part provides the theoretical framework. The second part illustrates the qualitative methodology employed and conducts the semiotic-linguistic analysis of a sample of Facebook posts and X (previously Twitter) tweets conveying conceptualizations of Italian identity: the analysis investigates the communicative, thematic and rhetorical elements both in the aforementioned posts and tweets and in a selection of the comments. The third and last part focuses on the communicative, linguistic and educational implications of the case studies: the author presents some theoretical and practical proposals which form the basis for a teaching toolbox in civic, communicative and linguistic education mainly addressed to upper secondary school and university students.
