The paper analyzes some graffiti from the 16th-19th centuries. Graffiti are verbal and iconic textual expressions, made by educated and less educated writers with an awl or pointed instrument, on places not meant to be written on, such as, among the most common, walls, stones, bas-reliefs, marble and wooden surfaces. The techniques of writing, the choice of surfaces to be scratched, and the execution of mercantile designs and coats of arms are indications of a refined taste acquired and absorbed in the workshops and crafts of Italian cities and towns. If the Made in Italy formula of commercial language indicates the place where an object is produced and conveys its culture, graffiti are also expressions of customs as well as techniques of high craftsmanship produced in the Italian peninsula.

Abstract
The paper analyzes some graffiti from the 16th-19th centuries. The techniques of writing, the choice of surfaces to be scratched, and the execution of mercantile designs and coats of arms are indications of a refined taste acquired and absorbed in the workshops and crafts of Italian cities and towns.
